Efficient Protocols for Improving VO2 max

High intensity interval training can significantly enhance VO2 max by ensuring the heart rate goes up to at least 80% maximum heart rate. Longer intervals such as one-minute intervals repeated four to five times can be effective. The Norwegian 4x4 protocol, involving four minutes of high-intensity exercise followed by three minutes of recovery, done four times, is considered an evidence-based and efficient method for enhancing cardiorespiratory fitness, as indicated by improvements in VO2 max.
