NOTE

Understanding Lactate and Acidosis

Lactate anion, carrying a negative charge, requires a positively charged cation, such as sodium, for transportation into the bloodstream, leading to the use of sodium lactate in medical settings. In studies, maintaining a lactate level of 4 millimolar was achieved with minimal sodium increase, indicating the importance of monitoring kidney function when administering sodium to patients. High lactate levels, particularly over 10 millimoles, correlate with significant discomfort and severe acidosis, which is more likely the cause of distress rather than lactate itself, as lactate's role is to moderate metabolic response and offer protective effects during intense exercise and strain.
