NOTE

The Origin of Breathing Rhythm and the Pre-Bötzinger Complex

The origin of the breathing rhythm lies in the pre-Bötzinger complex, a small region in the brain stem, which contains a few thousand neurons. This complex works in tandem on either side and is critical for generating the rhythm of breathing. The rhythm begins with neurons in this region becoming active and connecting to motor neurons going to the diaphragm and external intercostals, causing inspiratory effort. Once the neurons in the pre-Bötzinger complex finish their burst of activity, inspiration ceases and the muscles relax back to their original resting level.
