Psychologist Eli Finkel found that newlywed couples who wrote about an argument from the perspective of an outside observer three times a year did not experience the typical drop in relationship satisfaction. This allowed them to cool down intense feelings and see how they were contributing to the dynamic. The suggestion is to get out of your own head and observe your actions to improve relationships.
