Culture encompasses various meanings such as organizational culture, affinity groups, and the culture we are socialized into. Shallow culture refers to the hidden, unwritten rules just under the surface, shaping how we interact and adjust to different cultural norms. It involves performative actions without addressing core values and mental models. On the other hand, deep culture represents the core values and mental models that form the basis of our schema. Educators often focus on culturally responsive teaching, but the key question is whose culture it is responding to. Emphasizing the importance of expanding capacity to navigate across cultures, it aims to create a classroom where diverse brains feel safe and ready to learn.
