Investors Need Discipline for Long-Term Success

Funds with higher standard deviations tend to have larger gaps between fund and investor returns, especially for volatile funds. While fees are important, investors may be losing as much or more due to inopportune timing decisions than high fees. This data underscores the significance of investor behavior in long-term investment success. In one study, investors in value funds did not capture the value premium due to poor timing decisions, emphasizing the need for discipline, good behavior, and patience to successfully capture market premiums.
