I think it's hard to sustain hope in the face of defeat
i think we really cannot underestimate the impact of being part of a movement, of a moment of social and political hope. And then to see that defeated, and the corrosiveness of that, i think makes it at least somewhat understandable and intelligible. The taking a part of legal jim crow was obviously a massive social victory. But that was supposed to be just the beginning. That wasn't supposed to be te engal an. So i think it's hard to underestimated the impact of that on people.
