We tend to use painful counterfactuals more often than nicer counterfactuals, showing a bias toward negativity. However, this bias may have a benefit or be adaptive. Becoming happier doesn't mean ignoring negative if-onlys. Negative emotions serve a purpose and can provide valuable information to help us live better.
Regret sucks. Thinking back on things we should have done, or should never have done, can make us feel bad. But #noregrets isn't a philosophy for a happy and healthy life.
