Beware the Superfoods: Know Your Oxalate Risks
Certain foods renowned as superfoods, particularly high in oxalates, may pose health risks such as kidney stones. Spinach is the most well-known offender, followed closely by chard and beet greens, which are significantly worse. While most greens are safe, sorrel is an exception due to its high oxalate content. Additionally, nuts and seeds, specifically almonds, cashews, peanuts, chia seeds, and hemp, contain high levels of indigestible compounds and oxalates, making them less desirable for consumption. Other high oxalate foods include potatoes, sweet potatoes, buckwheat, blackberries, kiwi, dark chocolate, regular chocolate, and cocoa, thus indicating a need to monitor intake of these items for better health management.
