The Value of Eigenvector Centrality in Interpersonal Human Networks

Eigenvector centrality is a form of network centrality that is underappreciated but valuable in interpersonal human networks. It is based on the concept of weak ties being more important than strong ties in finding professional opportunities and life partners. Dense networks, where everyone knows each other, provide less value because the information is already known. The value comes from the second degree and beyond connections, known as eigenvectors, which offer access to different networks and a wider range of opportunities. It is more valuable to have a friend in a different dense network than in the same network. Eigenvector centrality expands beyond the popularity-based degree centrality, which focuses on the number of people you know or who know you, and instead considers how many people the people you know know.
