Historical Perspectives on Panpsychism and Descartes' Mind-Body Problem

Throughout history, philosophers like Plato and Descartes have approached the idea of panpsychism differently. While Plato connected psyche to various entities like humans, animals, plants, earth, and stars, Descartes introduced the concept of the mind-body problem by proposing that reality consists of two distinct substances: souls/minds and matter. Unlike the modern definition of consciousness, historical perspectives on panpsychism did not have a precise definition but revolved around ideas of psyche, soul, and living things from pre-socratic Greece to ancient India and China.
