Efficiency vs Resilience in Data Engineering
The traditional approach to answering questions is to efficiently do one unit of work for each question, leading to linear scalability. However, a more efficient approach involves upfront work to model concepts like users, activities, and features, allowing for answering a multitude of questions later with a little extra cost. This approach addresses both known and unknown use cases, promoting resilience. However, organizations are incentivized to prioritize efficiency over resilience, calling for a shift in mindset to embrace resilience without necessarily requiring new technology.
The data ecosystem has seen a constant flurry of activity for the past several years, and it shows no signs of slowing down. In this episode Juan Sequeda and Tim Gasper from data.world share their views on the core principles that you can use to ground your work and avoid getting caught in the hype cycles.
