The Regulation of Respiratory Muscles and Neurons

During rest, respiratory muscles are passive. When the body needs to increase air intake, the nervous system activates specialized neurons in the spinal cord and brain stem, which in turn contract the respiratory muscles for inspiration. After a period of activity, the muscles then return to their resting state. Understanding the origin of this neural activity was a long-standing question and a high priority for research, as it was essential to comprehend the rhythm of breathing.
