In job offer scenarios, I like to test people's engagement by throwing a little grenade in the water. I want to see their emotional reaction and if they're truly committed to their counteroffer. This helps me understand who I'm dealing with. It's like a progress curve - at the beginning, negotiation skills improve rapidly, but the pain curve is also high. Learning any new skill can be painful because your taste level is high, but your ability to execute is low, causing frustration. This pain is present in negotiations too.
