Under Saddam Hussein's rule, Shia Muslims in Iraq were tightly controlled and not allowed to practice their religious rituals freely, as Saddam and the Ba'ath Party belonged to the Sunni minority. After Saddam's regime fell, Shia Muslims were able to practice their faith publicly, which was unexpected by the American soldiers who invaded Iraq in 2003.
