By 2020, AMD affected approximately 196 million people, with projections rising to 288 million by 2040. Research indicated a strong correlation between the prevalence of AMD and the consumption of vegetable oils, alongside a lesser correlation with sugar intake. This suggests a link between the rise in processed food consumption and the increasing rates of macular degeneration worldwide.
