The traditional melting pot model of society is flawed as it portrays the original and receiving cultures as competing, whereas they can coexist. Research suggests that immigrants can have strong attachments to both their original and adopted cultures, known as integration, leading to better psychological outcomes for immigrants. Immigrants adapt better to the receiving country when they maintain a healthy attachment to their original culture, rather than when they lose it.
