The Utopian and Dystopian Versions of Followership

Followership manifests in both utopian and dystopian frameworks across command, management, and leadership domains. In the utopian model, constructive dissent is vital, where followers may challenge approaches but align with the overall vision. They provide critical insights when a leader veers off course, especially in tackling complex, wicked problems. Conversely, when dealing with tame problems that require technical expertise, followers' focus should be straightforward execution without dissent. On the other hand, the dystopian model presents a contrasting scenario. In situations involving wicked problems, followers may shirk responsibility, which can lead to misguided directions. In management contexts, overcompliance with illogical regulations can hinder effective functioning. Lastly, in coercive situations, the dystopian aspect is exemplified by followers outright rejecting authority, reminiscent of a state of mutiny where compliance is absent. These dynamic interpretations of followership highlight its complex nature and varying implications in different contexts.
