Episode #248: The Darkside of Protein

Barbell Medicine Podcast

NOTE

The impact of chronic acidosis and protein intake on bone health

Chronic acidosis can affect bone structure, but it is more concerning when kidney function declines because the body can't clear the acid load. In advanced kidney disease, acidosis can be treated to improve bone health. Eating protein does not cause bone wasting in people with healthy kidney function. Osteoporosis is determined by bone mineral density, and a high level of dietary protein does not increase fracture risk. However, low bone mineral density may increase fracture risk.
