In order to control population, society restricted people's sexuality through the European marriage pattern, delaying reproductive period until around 30 years old. This was important to prevent a Malthusian crisis caused by too many children. However, after the Black Death, which drastically reduced the population in the mid-14th century, the north of Europe lost over 50% of its population.
