The Impact of Skeletal Muscle on Creatinine Levels and GFR
Having a lot of muscle can make creatinine levels high, giving the false impression of worse kidney function. Conversely, individuals with decreased muscle mass may have low creatinine levels, falsely suggesting normal kidney function. This highlights the importance of considering a patient's baseline creatinine levels. Frail patients pose an additional concern, as looking solely at their creatinine levels may mistakenly indicate normal GFR. Skeletal muscle's impact on creatinine levels is just one flaw in using it as a marker of GFR, but there are other issues as well.
