Leadership is not about a position but a behavior. In high-performing teams, leadership is decentralized, with the leader stepping up based on expertise and proximity to a problem. This concept, known as dynamic subordination, emphasizes that leadership shifts based on the situation, requiring immediate adaptation and support among team members. The traditional models of leadership structures such as pyramid, flat, or servant leadership do not apply to dynamic subordination as it allows for agility, quick decision-making, and effective problem-solving within a team, particularly in challenging environments like combat situations.
