NOTE

Understanding Fat Burning and Body Fat Loss

Burning fat is essential in the process of losing body fat, but it is not the only factor. The relative rates of storing and burning fat determine whether body fat is gained or lost. In a high-carb, low-fat diet, fat burning is reduced, but so is fat storage. Carbohydrates are predominantly either oxidized or stored as glycogen, not converted directly to fat. Studies show that less than 2% of the fat stored in the body originates from carbohydrates. Energy balance, influenced by calorie intake, ultimately determines fat loss or gain. A comprehensive meta-analysis found no significant difference in body fat loss between low-carb, high-fat and low-fat, high-carb diets when calories and protein intake were equal. Protein's thermogenic effect slightly favors higher protein diets for fat loss. The key is adherence to a diet that suits individual preferences and lifestyle, as no diet type reigns superior in promoting body fat loss.
