Melatonin is generally safe for children, adolescents, and adults in 3-5 milligram tablets, best taken 90-120 minutes before bedtime to allow it time to work effectively in signaling the body for sleep. Taking melatonin at bedtime is ineffective. It can be safe for daily use with no side effects, contrary to the misconception that it is a sleep aid to be taken at bedtime.
