Feel Better, Live More with Dr Rangan Chatterjee

NOTE

Understanding the Different Waves of Sleep

Sleep consists of different waves in the brain, including slow wave sleep (SWS) and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. SWS occurs early in the night and is physically restorative, associated with growth hormone secretion and important for physical restoration. REM sleep occurs later in the night, is mentally restorative, and is when dreaming predominantly occurs. Aging leads to a decrease in both SWS and REM sleep, resulting in less purposeful sleep compared to infants.
