The Benefits of Red Light Therapy for Vision Loss

Consistent early morning exposure to red light can offset vision loss in individuals aged 40 and older. This effect is due to a circadian effect and improves overall visual acuity. Red light therapy devices that emit red light and potentially far near infrared light in the 650 to 720 nm range are recommended. The light should be viewed at a distance of about a foot and a half to two feet, and should not be so bright that it is painful to look at. Studies conducted by the Jeffrey Lab have shown impressive results in offsetting vision loss in individuals aged 40 and older. Red light exposure should be done early in the day.
