The Importance of REM Sleep and Dreams

During non-REM sleep, your brain indexes the information it learned throughout the day. REM sleep is when your brain becomes awake and alert again. Dreams during REM sleep feel real because they are based on the indexed information in your brain. Resting for the benefit of your brain requires a full REM cycle of at least 80 minutes. The optimal time for a periodic rest, according to CIA, is between 80 and 110 minutes.
