The Issue of Loyalty in Muslim-American Discourse
"Arabs and Muslims should not have to prove their loyalty by condemning Hamas." The idea of expecting condemnations is similar to the post-9/11 expectation for Muslims to condemn al-Qaeda. It is unfair and Islamophobic to demand loyalty in this way. The problem with the current debate is that it has become so polarized, with individuals feeling that acknowledging the pain of the other side weakens their own cause. This tribalistic mentality hinders proper understanding and dialogue. Unfortunately, this is how we now debate in the US, where it's either 'with us' or 'against us'.
