NOTE

Use of X-Rays in Diagnosing Rheumatoid Arthritis

X-rays are helpful in diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis, especially in the hands and feet to detect erosions. Marginal erosions at the MCP joints in the hands and the MTP joints in the feet are classic findings. MRI of the most affected area, particularly the hands, is recommended for sensitive detection of erosions not visible on x-rays. While clinical diagnosis by a rheumatologist is essential, classification criteria based on classic RA indicators like small joint involvement, positive rheumatoid factor or CCP, and elevated ESR and CRP are also useful, especially for non-rheumatologists.
