Despite their flexibility, 17 NCAA gymnasts ruptured their Achilles tendon, possibly due to excessive passive stretching. Coaches even had them sleep with devices to increase flexibility, but this method may not be effective. The passive movement actually alters the Golgi tendon organ reflex, reducing the body's ability to protect its musculoskeletal system.
