The therapeutic use of drugs aims to change a person’s baseline by promoting new neural connections and subsequent integration work, which can lead to lasting changes in behavior and mental health. Drugs used therapeutically can build neuro connectors that remain even when the individual is no longer under the influence of the drug, and the neuroplasticity of the brain can extend for weeks after the experience. This prolonged neuroplasticity can help anchor positive changes in behavior and mental health, making outcomes durable. The shift from viewing brain change as neurotoxicity to embracing it as neuroplasticity reflects the recognition of the profound and lasting outcomes of drug-assisted therapy.
