The Dr. Hyman Show

NOTE

The Influence of Light, Melatonin, and Sleep on Metabolism and Muscle

Melatonin increases mobilization of brown adipose tissue, a type of fat that burns fat and increases metabolism due to its density in mitochondria. Adequate sleep promotes the secretion of human growth hormone, known as the youth and repair hormone, which is muscle sparing and essential for healing and recovery. Sleep deprivation leads to increased cortisol levels, which can break down muscle tissue and hinder muscle building. High cortisol levels put the body in a stressed state, leading to the breakdown of valuable muscle tissue for fuel.
