In the late 1800s, only one in 17 middle-aged white men in the United States had obesity. However, the rate has drastically increased over time, reaching around 50% today. The pace of increase accelerated between the mid-1970s and mid-1980s, marking the start of the obesity epidemic. This epidemic has been ongoing for more than 40 years, and currently, 43% of US adults have obesity. This data focuses only on individuals with a body mass index over 30 and does not include those who are overweight.
