SSRIs increase serotonin levels in the brain, but do so non-specifically. Psilocybin, on the other hand, selectively binds to and activates serotonin-2a receptors in the neocortex, particularly in the prefrontal and visual cortex. This is why psilocybin triggers visual hallucinations. Even with closed eyes, profound visual hallucinations can occur with sufficient dosage.
