When it comes to giving advice, we're often better at helping others than helping ourselves. This is because our emotions cloud our judgment. However, there are psychological tools that can help shift our perspective and improve our reasoning. Two effective tools are coaching ourselves through a problem using our own name or the second person pronoun, and practicing temporal distancing by considering how we'll feel about the situation in the future. These tools allow us to think objectively and find better solutions to our problems.

Psychology professor Ethan Kross is an expert on the science of introspection and the role our inner voice plays in shaping our decisions and sense of well-being.
