Paying Attention to the Present Moment Increases Happiness
Where we place our attention significantly impacts our happiness. Attentional hygiene, or being mindful of how our attention is allocated, is crucial. Human attention has limitations, as it can be easily hijacked by external stimuli. This includes both negative events, such as a scream in a crowded theater, and positive events, like seeing vacation photos on Instagram. Moreover, our devices often steal our attention at important moments, disrupting our well-being and making us feel time-famished. Despite having the ability to disable notifications, we often choose not to. However, being present is an essential component of happiness. Research shows that when we mind-wander and are not fully present, our happiness levels decrease. Practices like meditation, which involve intentionally paying attention to the present moment with a non-judgmental attitude, have been found to increase happiness. The mere act of paying attention, even to seemingly mundane things, can have a positive impact on our well-being. Taking control of the factors that divert our attention and prevent us from being present can greatly enhance our overall happiness.
