Impact of Timing on Performance at Altitude
The initial adaptation period at altitude involves sleep disturbances, dehydration, and hyperventilation. Even mitigating these outcomes by arriving just before still compromises performance. Ultimately, the timing of arrival at altitude may not significantly impact performance unless one can stay at altitude for up to two weeks prior to an event. Otherwise, arriving two hours before, the night before, or five days out does not seem to make a substantial difference in performance due to lack of time for adaptation. Other logistical factors like cost, travel fatigue, family lifestyle, and job outcomes should also be considered in the decision-making process.
