The Women's Health Initiative and Hormone Replacement Therapy
The Women's Health Initiative was a large clinical trial designed to assess the benefits of menopausal hormone therapy on heart disease and breast cancer risk. The arm of the study using estrogen plus progestin was halted early due to concerns about breast cancer risk. However, newer studies indicated that estrogen plus progestin carries a higher risk of breast cancer compared to estrogen alone or transdermal estrogen with oral progesterone. The latter options are considered safe with low breast cancer risk. Overall, for most women experiencing menopausal symptoms treatable with hormone therapy, it is believed to be a safe option when used in context.
