Handling Everyday Life While Grieving with Melissa Zaldivar

“We tell the stories of Scripture over and over because they anchor us and remind us of what's true when things get blurry.”  This is a quote from Melissa Zaldivar’s book titled, “What Cannot Be Lost: How Jesus Holds Us Together When Life is Falling Apart.” We loved talking with Melissa on this week’s episode as we discussed grief and loss. In her book, Melissa tells the story of losing her friend Jill to cancer as she weaves together threads of the life of Louisa May Alcott, the author of “Little Women.” It is a beautiful, hopeful, and heavy story of how Jesus can meet us in whatever situation we find ourselves in. In today’s conversation, we talk about how to rightly handle the Scriptures when faced with loss, how to help others that are in grief, and where hope is found even as grief lingers. You may be experiencing a season of loss or you may be walking with someone who is in tremendous grief. Wherever you find yourself today, be encouraged by the truths of Scripture and the hope found in the gospel. Jesus will hold you together, just as He holds all things together (Colossians 1:17).   Sign up for the Daily Grace Podcast Newsletter and receive the free resource "Scripture for Every Season.”   Time Stamps: 0:56 - About Melissa 2:43 - Favorite things 4:07 - Melissa’s story of grief and loss 7:25 - What it was like writing on grief as she was walking through it 10:10 - Rightly handling Scripture in the midst of grief 15:22 - How grief surprised Melissa 18:13 - Encouragement for those who are grieving 20:16 - Encouragement for those walking alongside someone who is grieving 23:37 - What the gospel has changed for Melissa   Resources mentioned in this episode:  What Cannot Be Lost: How Jesus Holds Us Together When Life is Falling Apart Gospel Hope in Grief and Loss Scripture for Grief Card Set Between Grief and Glory: Lamentations Study   Access the What Cannot Be Lost Audiobook for Free: https://one-audiobooks.oneaudiobooks.app/what_cannot_be_lost_free   Connect with us: Subscribe to Daily Grace: on iOS, go to our iTunes page and click subscribe.  On Android, click this podcast RSS feed link and choose your podcast app.  If needed, you can copy this link directly into your favorite podcast app (like Stitcher or Overcast). Navigating Success and Failure Well w/Katie Davidson

We might try to avoid it but it’s inevitable—we all fail at something at some point. No matter if we are in the workforce, self-employed, at home, or in ministry, we face failure. But we will have moments of success as well, which in some ways can be even more difficult to handle. Navigating both of those with grace can be a challenge in different ways! How can we respond well as believers? In today’s conversation, Shelby and I invited staff writer Katie Davidson to join us as we talk about how to navigate success and failure. If you struggle to receive success with humility or failure with grace, we encourage you to join us in this conversation. We hope that it will provide you with some practical and Biblical wisdom to rightly navigate these situations in your everyday life. In the good and bad, whether we succeed or fail, we know that we can fix our eyes on God who is good and faithful and wise. Identity & Roles: Finding Our Worth in Christ, Not in the Titles We Hold

In today's episode, we discuss roles and our identity. It's a topic that listeners have messaged us about but it's also one that feels very relevant to Shelby and myself right now. We want to be faithful in the roles that God has entrusted to us, but we also don't want to find our primary identity in them. We attempt to untangle some of the complexities as we look to our identity in Christ and see what God's Word has to say about who we are as believers. Sign up for the Daily Grace Podcast Newsletter and receive the free resource "Scripture for Every Season.”   Time Stamps: :51 - Favorite things 3:23 - Why talk about identity and roles? 7:55 - Finding our identity in the roles we have 9:32 - Finding our identity in the roles we don’t have 15:36 - Scripture on identity in Christ 21:02 - How fulfilling our roles can be an overflow of our identity in Christ 23:51 - Prayer prompts and gospel encouragement   Questions to Consider: How do you react when success in your role is threatened? Do you still see your need for God when everything is going well in your roles? Or do you pull away from God because you are being satisfied by your roles? Does your contentment depend on getting a role that you don't currently have or keeping a role that you do currently have? Are you able to weather failure and criticism in your roles well or do these things crush you?   Prayer Prompts: Ask God to help you glorify Him in your current roles. Thank God for the roles He has given you and thank Him for his goodness and sovereignty in the roles that you don't have. Ask God to increase your joy and contentment with where He has you right now. Pray that the Spirit would convict you when you're tempted to place your identity anywhere other than Christ himself.   Favorite Things: Glossier balm dotcom The Whole Life: 52 Weeks of Biblical Self Care   Related Resources: Identity in Christ Verse Cards Confident in Christ: Gospel Meditations on Identity for Teens Blog: Identity Rooted in Christ Alone Podcast: Episode 9: Your Identity in Christ All Things New | Praying Scripture Journal  Scripture mentioned in this episode: Ephesians 5:11 Ephesians 1:4-5 Romans 8:15-17 Galatians 2:20   Connect with us: Subscribe to Daily Grace: on iOS, go to our iTunes page and click subscribe.  On Android, click this podcast RSS feed link and choose your podcast app.  If needed, you can copy this link directly into your favorite podcast app (like Stitcher or Overcast). The Faithfulness of God in Our Testimonies w/Afshin Ziafat

What’s your story? We all have one. As believers, God has crafted a story for each of us, bringing us into salvation through the work of His Son, Jesus. Your story may be one of faithful Christian parents that brought you up in the ways of the Lord. Your story may be one of wandering. Perhaps you became a Christian later in life after years of rebellion. Whatever your story entails, there is a common thread that we all share: the faithfulness of God. In today’s episode, Krystal chats with her pastor, Afshin Ziafat. Though he was raised in a Muslim household, Afshin came to know the Lord in his teenage years. Afshin has an incredible testimony and has the opportunity to share it all other the world. But in sharing his story, Afshin is clear to point out that it is a story of God’s faithfulness and not his own. Come chat with us about the faithfulness of God in our testimonies. When to Walk Away From Toxic People w/Gary Thomas

On today’s podcast episode, Gary Thomas talks to us about how to determine if the difficult people in our lives are toxic people and what to do if we discover they are toxic. Toxic is a cultural buzzword when it comes to relationships, but Gary doesn’t allow culture to define this word. Instead, he uses Scripture to explain to us the traits of a toxic person and relationship. He also shows us how Jesus handled difficult and toxic people. It may be surprising to you to learn that Jesus both walked away from people and let people walk away from Him many times in the gospels. And by studying His example we can learn how we should handle the difficult people in our lives.  Sign up for the Daily Grace Podcast Newsletter and receive the free resource "Scripture for Every Season.”   Time Stamps: 0:54 - About Gary 3:21 - Should Christians walk away from difficult relationships? 8:32 - Two times Jesus walked away from difficult people in the Gospels 15:20 - Does Scripture help us define when someone is not just difficult, but toxic? 23:56 - One reason why we should identify and separate ourselves from toxic people. 28:04 - One of the biggest reasons we don’t separate ourselves from toxic people. 31:04 - Practical steps to walk away from someone who is toxic 36:06 - How to handle toxic people that are in your immediate family 42:10 - Does forgiving someone mean we have to give them a second chance? 44:33 - FInal encouragement for those dealing with difficult relationships.   Resources mentioned in this episode:  When to Walk Away   Related Resources: Prayers for Friendship Cards Emotions and the Heart Study Praying Scripture for Marriage Journal   Scripture mentioned in this episode: Matthew 6:33-40 Matthew 8:28-34-9:1 Matthew 19:16-30 2 Timothy 2:2 Matthew 9:27 Colossians 3:8-12 Philippians 4:8 Matthew 6:9-13 Luke 15:11-32   Connect with us: Subscribe to Daily Grace: on iOS, go to our iTunes page and click subscribe.  On Android, click this podcast RSS feed link and choose your podcast app.  If needed, you can copy this link directly into your favorite podcast app (like Stitcher or Overcast).
