RHP#099. Lani Cooper, Australian Businesswoman, Stand-up Comedian, Adorkable SmartAss EcoWarrior, Founder and CEO of MOBOT
Australian Businesswoman. Role Model. Stand-up Comedian. Adorkable SmartAss. EcoWarrior. Brain Injury Survivor. Yoga Teacher. Therapist. Founder and CEO of MOBOT. Life can sometimes seem like a road of endless speed bumps, or a game of continuous curve balls. It’s your outlook and the way that you handle and deal with those challenges, that ultimately dictate how you act out your life. Our guest this week, Lani Cooper, is a lady who has had to deal with her fair share of trials and tribulations. However, she also has a lot to thank for those tough times. They conjured up the grit and determination to make a difference in the world and to help her build a world class brand. Lani, was born into an extended family of men! Her Dad got sick when she was young and they ended up losing everything. She became more introverted because she was getting bullied at school, for being slightly overweight and also being a Jehovah's Witness. As a youngster, Lani was definitely confused that to be accepted she had to be like the boys, instead of being herself and owning her feminine power. So it all went internal and she honestly didn't know, but it led to an eating disorder and then eventually to drug addiction. It was ultimately yoga and hydration that saved her life. She always had an entrepreneurial flair and spark in her and all these experiences were manifesting into something. Then one day, it struck her like a lightning bolt. A product people could use which combined all the things she was passionate about and had experience in… SMR (Self myofascial release or trigger point therapy), hydration, plastic pollution, and community building. Within 9 months of the lightning bolt moment, she had a prototype and patent for MOBOT. MOBOT is the original foam roller water bottle. ‘Courage’ should be Lani’s middle name. She moved over from Australia to the US in 2014, with two suitcases and only knowing two people. While playing touch rugby on the beach a guy took the game too seriously and ran straight into her, which ended up resulting in a serious brain injury. She couldn’t understand voice tones, facial recognition, and would lose clarity. She had no sense of taste or smell, and couldn’t remember what food she liked, and had no filter when speaking. She also became very isolated, angry, and aggressive. To top it off, she almost lost her company and a lot of friends too. Her recovery involved a ton of meditation and other tools like hertz music, acupuncture, essential oils, water and of course SMR. This is a lady who can definitely play with the big boys now, if she so chooses. Her story is one of resilience, aptitude, community, reflection and determination. Her smile and giggle are infectious and her desire to make this world a better place and bring people closer together are second-to-none. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Superhumanship#10 - Work Ethic and Eating Healthy - For New Age Micro-Leaders and Micro-Influencers
Superhumanship, is a bonus podcast series which we run, that is all geared towards authentic leadership. Each week we try to disseminate the wisdom shared by our guests and provide our two cents too. We believe that in this day and age, we are all leaders and all people of influence. New age leadership, is upon us. So therefore, we need to adapt and all realise we have this amazing opportunity to contribute to this shift in micro-leadership and micro-influence. This week we spoke about… Childhood / Parenting / Relationships: Growing up in South Africa taught us to stretch the rules The struggle of Apartheid made people very resourceful, created a good work ethic, taught good skills and a certain level of toughness too Due to the media and propaganda, people were fearful of Mandela leaving prison - big lesson is to ALWAYS remember there are 3 sides to any story Being told as a child that you can do anything Make life happen on your own terms Funny how the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree Life Lessons / Learning: Adaptability and the importance of it. Change is a standard part of life. It’s critical to embrace change. Change helps you grow as a person and is the only thing that is constant! Teaching yourself to do things Getting your head down and doing things for yourself Building and designing your own path Don’t be confined by moulds society places on you Entrepreneurial spirit is innate in some people Strong work ethic helps pave success The importance of travelling and seeing and experiencing different cultures Being proud of the South African flag and wanting to build the country up The importance of trying many things, and not being afraid to venture out and experiment Using all the skills and experience you have garnered over life to take you to the next stage Everything adds up and manifests into something which makes more sense later on Health: Being really fit doesn’t always equate to being really healthy How exercising alone is not enough and a trap that many people fall into How a good diet can literally reverse disease, improve your memory, etc Food is code in your body. It can lift your mood or lower it You are either moving closer to health or away from it Nutritionists giving really bad advice - calories in, calories out Hospital food - jelly, custard, say whaaaat…?! Do your own research and read the opposite of what you think Not having good food available in your house leads to bad habits The compounding effect of bad and good things The unnatural ingredients in our food - preservatives, flavouring, colourants, artificial sweeteners etc Dose dependent - Paracelsus Law If you want to feel good, look good and perform at your best, you have to put some effort and time and money into these things Eating healthy tips The change of mindset you experience when you get healthier Having two different opposing ideas can be right at the same time The importance of gut health and microbiome We are 99% bacteria Factors contributing to a healthy gut, vegetables, sleep, exercise, controlling your thoughts. Gut bacteria takes 6 months to reset, drug resistant bacteria is a future problem Influence: Achieving goals formula: Set an immovable deadline, make a financial commitment and pay upfront, make a public announcement and tell it to everyone. Pain in life can be a teacher Business: Patience and time is so important to build something of value and high standards Learn to listen to your gut, be authentic and then use intellect and language in different ways to explain where you want to go as an entrepreneur Creating a structure and environment at work which makes people want to come into the office and feel part of it Music By The Bambuseae Rhythm Section - Check them out here Right Hook Request HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT THE PODCAST? RHP#098. Wayne Kaminsky, Health Expert, Designer, Endurance Athlete, Experimenter and CEO of Fitchef
Health Expert. Designer. Endurance Athlete. Businessman. Obsessive Experimenter. Web Specialist. Smiler. Food Guru. Life Changer. CEO of Fitchef. Fitness and being healthy are two things that you would say are inextricably linked with one another. If you are fit, you are healthy and if you are healthy, you are fit. Alas, neither of those are things that necessarily go hand in hand. Our guest this week, Wayne Kaminsky, is a man who understands this all too well. Wayne is a man who sees himself as a constant work in progress and has always experimented with his career, lifestyle and health. Pushing the physical and mental limits, are traits that have taught him many life lessons. Wayne was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was always told by his parents that he could achieve whatever he set his mind to. Something which he would remember his whole life. After his first assessment as a Graphic Designer, his University suggested he choose a different career! In true Wayne spirit, he challenged his lecturers with their teaching methods and styles, and confidently let them know that he would make it in the industry. Years later, he achieved the Creative Director level, while working in London. In 2009-2010, he was competing in every endurance event he could find. A 12-hour day of training was nothing for him and he could easily categorise himself in the top 1% of the world when it came to being physically fit. However, despite being incredibly fit, he was still slightly overweight, he was super sick and on 14 courses of antibiotics over a 2 year period. His focus was non-existent, he was burnt out, he had adult ADHD, and to top it off he was getting divorced too. His dieticians advice to him was to eat fewer calories...There was no focus on the quality of the calories. So Wayne did what he does best and decided to enter Masterchef, South Africa. He would spend his time cooking, 4 to 5 versions, of one meal in a night, or 60-70 portions of meals on the weekends. To master the trade he was prepared to do the 10,000 hours it supposedly takes. After living on his own food for only 3 weeks, he had lost the extra weight he was carrying, he stopped taking all the antibiotics he had been on, and he experienced amazing energy and focus. So he decided to launch his business, called FitChef. As Wayne says, “All diets fail for one main reason, people don’t have good food available right now!” So FitChef lives by the ethos of being a 100% clean brand that makes amazing food easily available. Wayne is a man you can only admire because of his attitude of not being afraid to try new things. Hard work, sacrifice, experimentation and vision, have manifested a set of skills that have allowed him to create and cultivate a food business that literally changes people’s lives. The testimonials and success stories roll in every single day. Wayne also shares his best bits of advice on how to eat well, why your microbiome and bacteria are things that you need to become seriously interested in, and also how he sets goals and sticks to them. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Wayne Kaminsky, to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#097. Ard Matthews, Rock Legend, Musician, Singer Song Writer, Soloist and Lead Singer of Just Jinjer
Rock Legend. Musician. Singer. Songwriter. Smiler. Soloist. Philosopher. Laugher. Goofy Drunk. Optimist. Water Baby. Skipper. Lead Singer of Just Jinjer. How we measure success in life is often measured against the wrong things, like how rich we are or how much money we make. It is fascinating how we seem to have become so skewed and linear in our thinking when it comes to our success yardstick. Our guest this week, Ard Matthews, can relate to all of this. Although he has never experienced huge wealth, he has had massive stardom, and has had to deal with the struggle of what success looks like and means to him. Ard grew up in a single-parent household with his Mom and never quite understood why he didn’t have a father figure like all the other kids. He had to attend church a few times a week, as his Mom was rather spiritual and devoted. It led him to start his first band with his rebellious church mates, and christian death metal was their chosen genre! At 17 years old, he met his Dad for the first time...and it was an instantaneous ‘father-son bromance’. Ard doesn’t recall why exactly, but he never had any hard feelings towards his Dad and just made the most of their time together, catching up on all of the lost years. His folks were both musically talented and certainly passed down the genes to him. His ‘lucky’ break arrived when his mates egged him on to play the one song that he knew at the restaurant he was working at. As soon as he’d finished, his manager walked up to him and said he had to come back next week and play 10 songs. The saying ”never look a gift horse in the mouth’ had never been more true, so he took the opportunity with both hands! Ard eventually moved to London, but without a visa. All he could do was work on a farm for 6 days a week, 12 hours a day, for a wage of £60 a week. That just didn’t cut it for him though. His mate and him eventually got enough cash together to get some basic audio equipment and started busking in the streets of Leicester Square. They were soon earning £60 a night in front of large groups of people. Back in South Africa, they were rocking out small gigs and then serendipity stepped up to the plate. Another band, called Ard up after seeing him perform a few times, and said that they wanted him to join them. That was the beginning of one of the biggest rock bands in South Africa at the time, Just Jinjer. He led the way to the incredible success of Just Jinjer’s debut album, All Comes Round, which achieved double platinum status in it’s first year. The follow-up album, Something For Now, went double platinum the following year too! They spent a few years in LA, living the life of a true rock band trying to crack it big in the US. For a few reasons, they never quite made it there, however, it’s a time looked back on fondly. These days, Ard is now focussing on his solo career and his work has many deeper meanings with love running strongly at the core! He spends his time kite-boarding, surfing, being on boats, performing, recording new music and travelling the world, and gigging around his beloved South Africa. Aesthetically, Ard looks like a typical rock frontman. Long dreadlocks (well, at least back in the day!), tattoos and a funky dressing style. However, underneath the layers, there is so much depth to him. Philosophical in his outlook on life, he is someone who could never hurt a flea, has never been in a fight, is a goofy drunk, laughs more than anyone you know, always sees the bright side of things, is an optimist and realist, and has a very gentle way of being. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Ard Matthews, to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#096. Jacinta McDonell, co-founder of Anytime Fitness Australia, Founder of Human Kind Project and W1ll Yoga and Meditation Studio
Business Woman. Yogi. Socialpreneur. Mom. Smiler. Multi-Business Founder. Creative Gallant. Naysayer Crusher. Fitness Enthusiast. Co-Founder Anytime Fitness Australia. To be or not to be...there are many ways in business to be, and many ways not to be. To be successful you can choose to be hard-nosed, aggressive, stubborn, and controlling, or on the other hand, humble, open, vulnerable, empathetic and human-centric. The latter is going to help you build a longer-lasting business empire and customers who care more. Jacinta McDonell, grew up in Sydney, Australia. She was born into a family of fitness, health and entrepreneurship! Exercise and business have paved the way for the rest of her life’s journey. Jacinta was not the academic type in school, but she did have a flare, love and passion for the creative subjects. After school finished, all she wanted to do was go out and get into the workforce. Some might think that business and family don’t go together, but Jacinta will proudly convince you otherwise. When she was 18, she opened a gym with her brother and Mom. In 2007, her brother gave her an article in a magazine to read about gyms in America, that were open for 24-hours. That single article, piqued her interest and then the next day, her and Justin, were on the phone to Snap and Anytime Fitness in America, expressing their interest and wondering if they could buy the franchise for Australia. They had to deal with the naysayers, and people who told them that 24-hour gyms would never work in Australia. Over 500 clubs later and being inducted into the Fitness Industry Roll of Honour, we’ll let you decide who is smiling now :) Everything comes with it’s consequences though, and 3 years into their business the stress started taking toll, and her doctor said she should do something about it. That’s when she got involved with Yoga, and ever since, she has fallen in love with it and has her own solo practise which she does routinely. In 2014, while she was going through a separation and when her youngest child was only six months old, something was ignited in her while she was at a Business Chick's event. So off she went to Malawi and turned her entrepreneurial passion towards ventures that aim to change the way businesses view ‘Giving’ and ‘Social Responsibility’. A strong advocate of using ‘business for good’ - Jacinta established The Human Kind Project in 2015. A not-for-profit foundation that funds life-changing projects in Africa and India. Jacinta is certainly an incredible lady, she is a Mom to three young kids, and the inspiration to many other ladies and business women. Some of her secrets to success are; being super disciplined with your routines, limiting or not consuming irrelevant and distracting information, being 100% genuine and taking on difficult conversations, doing things for your overall health and wellness even if you don’t love doing them every time, and remaining true to who you are and what values you live by. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Jacinta McDonell, to be Ridiculously Human. RHP#095. Michael O’Brien, Author, TEDx Speaker, Executive and Leadership Coach, CEO of Peloton Coaching and Consulting
Author. TEDx Speaker. Executive Business Coach. Mindset Shifter. altMBA Alumni. New Age Leader. Dad. Loving Husband. Peloton Pilot. Bad Day Slayer. Flawesome Human. So many of us in life are stuck in jobs that we don’t enjoy, we are in relationships that are not providing us with what we want, and are generally feeling uninspired by life. Yet, we fail to do anything about it and feel trapped. Fortunately, there are people on this planet who can help us make those changes without waiting for something bad to happen. Michael O’Brien, at the age of 33, was out on the road enjoying a cycle in New Mexico, when his life would change forever. He was hit head-on by an SUV, that was travelling at 40mph. He remembers every bit of it and while lying on the asphalt all torn and broken up, he vowed to himself that things would need to change. Michael, joins us for his second time on the Podcast to discuss what he has been up to since we last spoke and also to speak about his latest book called, My Last Bad Day Shift. In this conversation, we traverse across life and business advice, which Michael (OB) has garnered from his personal experience and the many people he has taught and coached over the years. One of the overarching themes of the chat is around the importance of good communication. Do you discuss different phases of your life and what your expectations are with your partner? Do you say “No” enough? You may have heard the words, empathy, compassion, caring, kindness, being bandied around in the last few years. The good news is they are now creeping into the workplace and we are seeing a surge in new age masculinity, female mentorship, diversity, and equal pay. However, we still need men to lean in more and be comfortable with accepting different definitions of what it means to be a man. OB, practises this daily. From his latest book, we dive into a really important discussion around: How ‘bad days’ can hijack us and lead us down a slippery slope if we are not careful Limiting beliefs - while they are there to protect us, we must not let them control us. Energy Management and doing things that keep us in alignment with our spiritually, mental health, wellness, relationships and finances. Changing how we work and why it’s essential to give yourself time each day to think. The necessity of recovery, and not feeling guilty about it. What makes us fast, is recovery. Improving your financial knowledge and understanding why money is important to you. Having daily routines will help you prosper. Especially in the morning and evening. Surrounding yourself with the right people who challenge you, who think abundantly, who help when you are down, who have a different point of view, and who are practically optimistic. Seeing the evolution of OB as a person and human is incredible and makes us feel extremely proud. The growth of his personal brand, and the message he is sharing and spreading, are a testament to the change and impact he wants to have on this world. In a time of what sometimes seems like a crisis, we need more and more people to step up to the plate and lead with integrity. OB is the man for that. We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did. Let’s find out what it means for Michael O’Brien, to be Ridiculously Human. Superhumanship#6 - Diversity and Grief - For New Age Micro-Leaders and Micro-Influencers
This week we spoke about… Articulating your story well Growing up in a diverse environment Being adaptable to change and building up resilience Enjoying challenges and not seeing them as barriers Chasing money will leave you feeling burn out Never taking your health for granted How pain in the mind affects the body and vice versa The importance of talking about your issues and challenges in life When you get your mindset right, then you can get through anything Showing up as our best selves Managing grief and pain in the workplace Human centric leadership Having a supportive group of people in your tribe Be ok with asking for help Creating healthy boundaries The power of choice Loving yourself more and not allowing others to project their expectations onto you Self-confidence and self-esteem Gratitude journalling and documenting your confidence check points Being brave and stepping into who you were created to be Music By The Bambuseae Rhythm Section - Check them out here Right Hook Request HOW CAN YOU SUPPORT THE PODCAST?
