#091 Bob Bowman

Bob Bowman is the Head Coach of Arizona State University's Swimming & Diving Team. Coach Bowman served as Team USA's Head Olympic Swimming Coach for the 2016 Rio Games. And, as you already know, coached the greatest Olympian of all time, Michael Phelps, throughout his entire illustrious career. Now, in retirement, Michael cooks Bob dinner several nights a week while he gets to play with the kids. Brett and Bob begin with corona virus and Coach Bowman's decision to redshirt his entire team.  Several years ago Bob gave a speech entitled, "The Characteristics of Champions". In this episode, Brett turns the tables to find out how these characteristics relate to him, Bob Bowman, as a champion swim coach. "How do I become the next Bob Bowman?" - Brett Hawke Brett and Bob go through each of his champion characteristics: Champions have a clear plan for success in achieving their goals. Champions produce normal and predictable performances in very  abnormal and unpredictable environments. Champions rehearse success on a daily basis -- physically, mentally, and emotionally. Champions value the process of success more than any particular outcome. Champions have a dream. Champions have a passion for pursuing their vision of success that will overcome obstacles, get them through the tough times, and carry them to spectacular performances throughout their career. #089 Jodie Henry

Jodie Henry is a 3x Olympic Champion. She won the 100 Free at the 2004 Athens Olympics and was part of both of Australia's winning relays (4x100 Free and Medley). She was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2015. She learned how to swim at a young age and just progressed from there. It got serious at Chandler Swimming Club. Eventually moved to be coached with Shannon Rollason and his brother, Nathan. In 2000, at just 16 years old, missed making the Sydney Olympic team by just .02. Instead, got to enjoy a home Olympics, learn and watch. Jodie suggests so much of her swimming memories are all melted together.  Being a very anxious person and being able to shut it down behind the blocks. Shannon gave her a specific plan to wave and smile. 2003 World Championships in Barcelona. Breaking the 100 Free World Record in Semi Finals at the 2004 Athens Olympics . She went 53.52. Shannon calms her down, gets her mind right to prepare to go out and race and win. She really pulled away from the field over the last 25 meters. Training back end speed.  Jodie Henry's Favorite Swim Set:  4x 8x50's @ :35 holding :30 or under 1x200 recovery She did this set all the time by herself! The Relays. Her relationship with Alice Mills (now Tait) and Libby Lenton (now Trickett). At one point in time the 3 fastest girls in the world in the 100 Free were all in Brisbane. Training like a sprinter. #088 Fred Bousquet

Fred Bousquet was the first man to break 19 in the 50 SCY Free as well as the first man to break 21 in the 50 LCM Free. He was, without a doubt, one of the greatest relay swimmers in the history of the sport. While the individual Olympic medal fell just outside his grasp, he was the epitome of a team player. He swam for his team and for his country, not for himself.  Brett and Fred begin the conversation with breaking the 19 second barrier in the 50 Free at NCAA's.  Fred swam 3rd on the 4x100 Free Relay at the Beijing Olympics, giving Alain Bernard .8 tenths of a second lead over Jason Lezak and Team USA. We did a mash up of Lezak (Episode #087) and Fred about the greatest relay of all time. You can watch it here.  Brett and Fred have a long, personal history of working together. They talk about the good times and the bad. Brett is open and vulnerable to criticism. They discuss the 20.94 performance at French Championships. Brett describes Fred as having the most beautiful freestyle there ever was. Nobody created power and and speed quite like him.  Enjoy! Subscribe, Review, Share! #087 Jason Lezak

Jason Lezak got kicked off the UCSB swim team in the middle of his Junior year. A decade later he split 46.0 on the back of Team USA's 4x100 Free Relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympics to reel in France's Alain Bernard.  It is the Olympic performance of all Olympic performances. The swim of all swims. His last name literally become a verb.  Jason is now the GM of the Cali Condors. Brett and Jason talk about... How were you so consistent both domestically and internationally for such a long period of time? Why did you go to UC Santa Barbara? Didn't make NCAA's as a Sophomore, got kicked off the team, and then made Finals as a Junior. Big progression in a short time. Starting doing all the little things right. Sleeping. Eating. SYDNEY Getting beat by the Australians in 2000 in the 4x100 Free Relay and receiving a Silver medal. What regrets do you have on that relay? Def over swam the first 25.  ATHENS What was Athens like for you? "I was looking at that relay for 4 years and all I wanted to do was like I said get on that podium and hear the National Anthem and this time we got the Bronze medal to start the Olympics..." - Jason Lezak Taking it too easy in Prelims and getting 21st in the 100 Free. Swam in the Finals of the 50 Free with Brett. He was in Lane 3, Roland Schoeman was in Lane 4 as top seed, and Brett was in Lane 5. Finishing Athens strong with a Gold medal 4x100 Medley Relay. Gary walking out in the silk robe. What's your recollection from that race?  You had some tension with Gary Hall Jr. didn't you? Tell me about that. Team USA's 4x100 Free Relay from 1999-2004 just couldn't come together. BEIJING Broke the AR at OT's in the 100 Free. Had anchored the relays for years, was very prepared.  Brett was coaching Fred Bousquet at the time. Gives his perspective.  Jason thought he false started. Did you get in the zone? Were you on auto pilot? How did you stay in the game for so long? Nathan Adrian over taking Jason as the top American. Cesar Cielo. "People were telling me to retire after every Olympics." - Jason Lezak Coaching himself starting in 2006. He swam until he was 36. Being the GM of the Cali Condors. Australians have pulled out. #086 Save Tribe Swimming

William & Mary is considered one of the most prestigious academic schools in the country. You may have heard of some of their famous alumni... Thomas Jefferson. James Monroe. John Tyler.  America's brightest swimmers don't go to W&M for the scholarships because there are none.  And they certainly don't go for the facilities -- the pool is not worthy of the accomplishments that Tribe Swimming has achieved. They attend W&M because the people that go to W&M are a special kind of people. One could say they are from the same Tribe... Brett welcomes Rich Williams from the W&M Class of '98 on the podcast to help spread the word to SAVE TRIBE SWIMMING! Go to savetribeswimming.com to donate today! Subscribe, Review, Share! #085 Jonty Skinner

Jonty Skinner didn't get to swim at the 1976 Olympics because South Africa was banned. But a few weeks after the Olympics ended, he broke Jim Montgomery's world record in the 100 Free by over half a second. Jonty left South Africa to swim for the University of Alabama where he was an NCAA Champion under Don Gambril. Over the next decades he would have several coaching stints at Bama as well as time spent with USA Swimming as the National Team Head Coach and Director of Performance Science and Technology. He was inducted into the ASCA Hall of Fame in 2017. If you've never been to Alabama before...nothing is more important than War Eagle vs. Roll Tide.  The former rival coaches in the great state of Alabama discuss... In 1976, you were not allowed to compete at the Olympics. How'd that feel? South Africa had been banned since 1964. "It didn't bother me that much...I knew growing up it wasn't going to happen." - Jonty Skinner Don Gambril told me I needed a year to adapt to the training. "I was a 2." Being relieved after breaking the world record. What helped me remember was listening to Mel Stewart interview BJ Bedford.  Finding each athlete's motivation. Improving each athlete on a holistic level. Really get to know them.  Creating a seasonal plan and understanding what goes into that. One of the best pieces of advice Brett got as a young coach from David Marsh.  When does the book come out?! Maybe next summer. Zane Waddell calls Jonty a wizard. How do you get wizard status? What are the must haves, the must dos for a swim coach? 1. understand them as a person 2. study them as a swimmer 3. educate them about the sport of swimming I love speed and I love freestyle: so how do we get faster? Can we go 20.0 and 46.0 in the 50 and 100? The evolution of freestyle. Stuck in high elbow. Tech suits came around and blew that out of the water.  Caeleb Dressel. How do you coach an athlete to believe they can beat the unbeatable?  Never met Nick Saban.  And much more! Subscribe, Review, Share!
