#174 Shannon Rollason

Shannon Rollason is a 4x Olympic swim coach  for Australia and Denmark. He has coached Pernille Blume, Jeanette Ottesen, Rikke Moller Pederson, Belinda Hocking, Alice Mills,  and Jodie Henry. As well as newly minted Australian Olympian Jessica Hansen.   You may remember episode 42 with Alice Tait who talked about Shannon's unique style of reverse cycling -- going fast at the beginning of the season. Brett digs in deep to find out more.    It took Australia 48 years to win the Women's 100 Free....now they dominate the event. What has changed since Jodie Henry in the Women's 100 Free?    Shannon shares his training philosophies on pulling, kicking, and more. He also discusses the importance of long, uninterrupted training blocks vs. racing.    This might be the most actionable interview we've produced yet. As a swim coach, this interview is as good as gold.    Enjoy!   03:30 Jessica Hansen 04:00 COVID Training 06:35 Training Philosophy 08:15 Practicing vs. Racing 9:25 David Popovici 47.30   10:30 Ignore youth at your peril 10:55 Women's 100 Freestyle Progression 14:25 Pernille Blume 17:20 Reverse Periodization 21:15 Julia Ham the Guinea Pig 27:20 Pulling 28:40 Kicking 32:00 Evolving 42:00 New South Wales Support Our Sponsors: SWIM ANGELFISH: Receive the tools and skills needed to teach swimmers with autism, physical disabilities, anxiety, sensory and motor conditions with Swim Angelfish, the global leader in adaptive swim. #173 Austin Surhoff

Austin Surhoff is a professional swimmer (and current free agent) training to make the International Swimming League. He won the 200 IM at NCAA Championships back in 2010 while swimming at the University of Texas. He grew up swimming for Bob Bowman at NBAC and would ultimately return to swim alongside Michael Phelps and Chase Kalisz to train for the 2016 Rio Games, placing 8th in the 200 IM. Fast forward to 2021, he just finished 21st and 29th in the 50 and 100 Freestyles, respectively, at US Olympic Trials. Best times for him. He's gone from being a 200 IMer/Backstroker/Freestyler to a 22.5 50 Freestyler. He talks about how he trains now, taking a little bit of everything from everyone that he has worked with along the way. He has coached at Johns Hopkins and as a volunteer with UVA and Todd DeSorbo. Austin discusses the culture at Texas under Eddie Reese and Kris Kubick, as well as potential successor, Wyatt Collins. He dives into what it was like to train with the GOAT for two years leading up to 2016. And, overcoming some mental health struggles along the way. #172 Giaan Rooney

Giaan Rooney is a 2x Olympic swimmer for Australia (2000, 2004) who captured a Gold and two Silvers medals. Giaan loved racing and at one point in time, loved training. Her love-hate relationship with swimming is highlighted by the fact that she has not taken a stroke since her retirement. At 15, she erupted onto the scene by winning the 100 Back at the Commonwealth Games. She was driven by the confidence that her workload gave her. She went on to be a vital part of Australia's silver medal winning 4x100 Medley Relay and 4x200 Free Relays in front of the home crowed at the 2000 Olympic Games. A year later, she was crowned the 200 Free World Champion in Fukuoka, Japan. Just 12 months later, after a disappointing Commonwealth Games, she was ready to hang it up. Instead, she made the move from Miami to Melbourne where she ended up training under Ian Pope along side Grant Hackett, Daniel Kowalski, Brett, and many others.  A television personality, broadcaster and commentator, you may have just heard her on Amazon Prime during the Australian Olympic Trials.
