Fair Share?: The Future of Public School Funding in Ohio
For nearly 25 years, Ohio lawmakers have been working on a plan to overhaul the way the state\'s public schools are funded. In early November, Senator Peggy Lehner (R-Kettering) and Senator Vernon Sykes (D-Akron) introduced the bipartisan Fair School Funding Plan (Senate Bill 376), a companion bill to the previously introduced House Bill 305. The plan aims to keep local tax dollars in school districts by directly funding public, private, and charter students where they are educated. Advancing Racial Equity in Ohio's Schools
There is no institution more critical in the fight for racial equity than education. Yet, our education system remains subject to the very ailments that perpetuate structures of inequity and exclusion. Recently, the Ohio State Board of Education passed a resolution to "condemn racism and advance equity and opportunity for Black students, Indigenous students, and students of color." Nov. 20, 2020: Democracy Unchained: A City Club Special
In September, we launched a new video series called Democracy Unchained. The series is part of the State of American Democracy Project aimed to help deepen and broaden the present conversation about democracy and connect it to effective action to repair and strengthen democratic institutions. It is neither conservative nor liberal, but aims rather to advance the restoration of respect for the rules of tolerance, fairness, and equality before the law that are the sine qua non of democracy.\r\n\r\nMuch of the work ahead requires repairing institutions, "habits of heart," and political culture that have atrophied over many decades. Important parts of the work ahead, however, will require new thinking about governance, politics, and policy to meet the challenges of the "long emergency" posed by a destabilizing climate, loss of species, and the cascading effects of ecological systems failure that will threaten food and energy systems and thereby governments, economies, and domestic tranquility.\r\n\r\nThis hour-long show will feature some of the most powerful moments of the Democracy Unchained series, all focused on rebuilding the American government for the people.

November 18, 2020: Youth Forum: Navigating Support Services in an Evolving Digital Environment
The shift to learning, working, and living in a digital environment has meant radical shifts in how the youth experience the world around them.\r\n\r\nFor many of today\'s children and teens, physically going to school was the only means by which they received adequate exercise through physical education courses and sports. Going school also meant the possibility of receiving help for online bullying, which has drastically increased as kids and teens need to spend more time online than ever before. For students who are immigrants, instruction and being around others their age was an important factor in their success in their new country. For students in personal crises, help may be even further out of their reach than ever before.\r\n\r\nHow are schools and social services juggling the existing problems, new issues, and current needs of kids and teens in a digital environment? How is this support reaching everyone in need?\r\n\r\nJoin us for a City Club Youth Forum discussion on the ways in which in-school support and social services are making changes to support the digital new normal for the youth.
