001: Andy Hibel and the Effect of Small Acts

I invite guests to share personal stories about acts of leadership that help shape their lives. Andy Hibel helps me launch the first episode by explaining his personal growth perspective, recognizing opportunities to lead, and how leadership is practiced. 00:45 Prologue: Andy encouraged me to start the podcast, and I think it’s appropriate that he is part of the first show. We met at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before shifting his career from being a planned giving officer to an entrepreneur. Andy co-founded HigherEdJobs.com and is the company’s Chief Operating Officer. While he lives and works in the Chicago area and I work near Charlotte, I consider Andy a close friend. 02:17 Part 1: Choosing Your Attitude about Development Whether grown organically or shaped deliberately, we all have a set of attitudes about personal and professional development. Andy shares something that helped shape his attitude about personal change. 09:26 Part 2: Opportunity to Lead Leading mostly happens in small acts, but occasionally, we find substantial opportunities to lead. Andy tells a story about taking donors to the Holocaust Museum 19:17 Part 3: Leading with Action Andy discusses his perspective of what’s considered to be leadership. Leading with our words is a leadership element, but speaking alone is insufficient, or at least, isn’t the most common part of leadership. _________________________________ How You Can Support the Show Unlabeled Leadership is a free service for people to learn about leadership. 000: Beginning the Journey

Welcome to Episode 0, my first attempt at creating a podcast episode. In it, I describe why I'm doing the show and the two show formats. A transcript is available.   00:16  Prologue: Eugene Power and Finding a Nitch I begin by sharing the story of how Eugene Power founded the company, University Microfilms (now called ProQuest). I link the story to why I'm podcasting about leadership.   05:46  Part 1: Why Unlabeled Leadership I define Unlabeled Leadership and explain the show's intent (hint: improve how we lead).   08:47 Part 2: What to Expect For the remainder of the episode, I explain how the Tuesday/Thursday guest format and the Wednesday format differ. _________________________________ How You Can Support the Show While Unlabeled Leadership is a free service for people to learn about leadership, the production can be expensive.
