ICYMI: Balancing Friendships When Everyone’s Busy, How Many Hours It Takes To Make A Bestie, And Why Friends Are Good For Your Health, with Dr. Miriam Kirmayer

Welcome to today’s ICYMI, where we kick off the week with a quick game-changing tip from one of our guests that you might have missed. Gather 'round, besties... ahead of Galentines Day, we're talking friendships. If everyone in your bestie group chat is so busy you're planning a month out for your next hang, this one's for you. Our 20s and 30s can feel lonely and isolating AF as all our friends enter different life stages, get hella busy, and move around the world. So if you're feeling some kind of way about the state of your friendships right now, you're not alone. We actually replace half of our friend group every seven years, so it turns out this is a right of passage. But making friends (and keeping the good ones) is wildly important for our happiness and our health, so we're kicking it back to one of our favourite conversations with psychologist and friendship expert, Dr. Miriam Kirmayer, who reveals why we need to prioritize our friendships, how much time it takes to form friendships, and the commonalities we should look for. Having spent over a decade researching the science of friendship and helping people live more connected lives, Dr. Miriam is a clinical psychologist, writer, speaker, and leading expert on friendship and social connection. She’s appeared on some of our favourite media outlets, from Call Her Daddy to Vogue and The New York Times. She sits on the Mental Health Advisory Committee for Wondermind, a media company co-founded by Selena Gomez, and is a member of The GenWell Project, a human connection movement. She also has a private practice and is one of the first and only licensed clinical psychologists to specialize in friendship therapy!Listen to our full episode with Dr. Miriam  here.Tune in every Monday for an expert dose of life advice in under 10 minutes.Follow Dr. Miriam:miriamkirmayer.com@miriamkirmayerThis show is produced by:Gillian Berner, Host, Producer & EditorOlivia Nashmi, Audio EngineerKyla Killackey, Digital EditorCarolyn Schissler , Designer & Web ProducerFor advertising and sponsorship inquiries, please contact Frequency Podcast Network. ICYMI: Layoff Stories Are Trending On TikTok…Here’s What Happened When I Was Laid Off, And What I Learned From It

Welcome to this week’s ICYMI, where we kick off the week with a quick game-changing tip from one of our guests that you might have missed. Horrible layoff stories are trending on TikTok right now, led by badass Gen-Zs like Brittany Pietsch who worked at @Cloudflare, who are filming and posting their virtual firing meetings. And I’ve been there. From being shepherded into a room like cattle where dozens of colleagues and I were unceremoniously laid off by HR, to managing my boss’s calendar as their meeting to lay me off was scheduled into it — I know a thing or two about the emotional damage of getting laid off by a company you worked your ass off for.So we're throwing it back to my layoff experiences that I shared in season 1, and everything I learned from it. The most important thing? You actually can’t blame yourself or allow it to inform your identity and self-worth. It’s a numbers game that has nothing to do with you — maybe you were the most recent hire, or you make $1K more than your teammate. Often, the people who you work closest with, like your manager, aren’t even involved in these decisions.Getting let go is devastating, but it’s also an opportunity to reevaluate. Use this as a chance to build a solid strategy for your career trajectory. Get intentional about your purpose and your job values, and only apply to opportunities that check those boxes.Listen to the full episode here!Tune in every Monday for an expert dose of life advice in under 10 minutes. This show is produced by:Gillian Berner, Host & ProducerOlivia Nashmi, Audio EngineerKyla Killackey, Digital EditorCarolyn Schissler , Designer & Web ProducerFor advertising and sponsorship inquiries, please contact Frequency Podcast Network. Feeling your feelings is hard work. But it's worthy work if you want to live a full life...and we can do hard things. We all have an ever-evolving relationship with our emotions: Some of us dive headfirst into heartbreak, some avoid the discomfort of grief, some are just learning to process difficult past traumas, and others show us the beauty of how to alchemize our experiences into vulnerable words and art. Today, we are talking to the wise, talented, and incredibly lovely Allie Michelle, who captures the depths of human emotion through her beautiful writing and spoken word.
