Every week, I meet individually with 15-18 people to help them with their job searches, interviews, and salary negotiations. Inevitably, I get questions such as… “Coach, I had this interview. The recruiter talked the entire time. Didn’t ask me a single question. What should I have done?” “Andy, the interviewer started the interview with ‘What questions do you have for me?’ and I wasn’t sure what to do! Why would they do that?” “How should I answer a question like, ‘Why shouldn’t we hire you?’” You get the idea. Stomach turning. No more. Many want it. The good life. The few. They want the great life. The rest. What’s left. You guessed it. They pursue heights so high most people dismiss them as unattainable. Whichever group you’re in, I know you’ll eventually pursue some personal Mount Everest. You know the one I’m talking about. The one that, somewhere along the climb, makes you question your choices. Whether it’s a project that takes a week that seems like “the longest week ever” or 20 years to pursue your life’s dream, you’re gonna encounter the “B” word. If you haven’t encountered the B word, you’re probably settling. Ouch. True. Burnout happens. Ask anyone who’s pursued a worthy dream. Burnout especially happens during the month of March. Why March? Seems like such a nice month, doesn’t it? People generally set lofty goals during January. (Fairly obvi.) Some quit before the month is over. Some make it until February before they throw in the towel. If you’re still hanging on in March… You guessed it. Fatigue sets in. Andy Sunshine is here to tell you, “No shortcut ever gave you what you deserved nor ever will.” The long and worthy road is filled with a few…”Hang on. I gotta catch my breaths.” I want to help you make sure you get what you deserve, so I’m giving you a bit of my formula on how I manage to “enjoy the doing” during the lengthy pursuits of my biggest goals. It’s still January, which means technically I’m trending if I talk about goal setting. Are you achieving yours? Goals that is? I’m not really a goal-setter per se, as much as I strive to be an accomplish-er. And, I guess now that I’ve written that previous sentence and am too lazy to go back and change it, I’ll just correct it here... I have never arrived as much as I am always “on arrival.” I don’t really accomplish, as much as I enjoy. The joy is in the doing I like to say. Sure, I touchdown from time to time. Some might misconstrue my pitstops as accomplishments. But I strive to live in a state of progression. Nothing is ever the destination. Lemme ask ya. Is there anything more confusing than job titles when it comes to job searching and your career planning? I think not. Have you ever wondered… Do job titles matter? Does anyone care? How do I explain my title when no one outside my company knows what system engineer III means? Should I apply for lower-level titles to increase my chances of getting a job? Can I apply to higher level jobs when I’m qualified but my title doesn’t indicate that? Uh. Wait. Do I need to explain to future job interviewers that I had more responsibility in this manager role than my previous director role?
