Kickboxers rarely make it big in MMA. Many struggle to adapt their skillset beyond striking. In order for them to be champion level in MMA, it requires them to become proficient in wrestling and jiu jitsu, which requires they start at "the bottom" again. Very difficult to go back to being a novice when you've been accustomed to living as a champion. But apparently that's what it takes. And of course there's an obvious parallel with owning or leading companies- as the company grows, it requires new skills. In some cases, radically different skills than were required to get you to your current size/scope. There's a quote that's been attributed to Clate Mask, the founder and CEO of Keap (formerly Infusionsoft), one of the leading marketing automation software platforms: "A good leader can take a company through a single successful growth cycle. A great leader can take the team through two growth cycles. And a unicorn can lead a company through 3 or more periods of significant growth." The implication of course, is that as our companies grow, we have to be prepared to completely retrain ourselves on the new skills required for the next season of growth.
