Ruthless Consistency with Michael Canic
Welcome to the What's Next! podcast with Tiffani Bova. This week I am excited to welcome Michael Canic to the What's Next Podcast! Michael is the President of Making Strategy Happen, a consulting firm that helps committed leaders turn ambition into strategy, and strategy into reality. For the past 20+ years, he has instituted the structure and discipline of his strategic management system in organizations across North America. Previously, he managed the consulting division at The Atlanta Consulting Group, and prior to that held a leadership role at FedEx. He earned a Ph.D. in the Psychology of Human Performance from the University of British Columbia and is a former national championship-winning college football coach–he is also a member of Marshall Goldsmith's 100 Coaches global initiative. His new book, RUTHLESS CONSISTENCY: How Committed Leaders Execute Strategy, Implement Change and Build Organizations That Win published in September of 2020. THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… leaders and organizations that are taking on too much and need to refocus for success. TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… It's easier to say than do...that's why 70-80% of strategic change initiatives fail. So, what can you do? Well, Michael has a few questions for you? Have you developed the right focus - a concise, compelling, clear-focus? Have you created an environment of both engagement and performance where you can capture people's hearts as well as their heads? And importantly, have you built the right team? That's what MichaelCanic is here to talk about. That, and how important it is to be ruthlessly consistent when going about it. WHAT I LOVE MOST… Sometimes we get so enamored with the BIG things that we have to do that we forget the little things, and consistency is one of those "little" things that is key! The Good Guys: Mentoring Women and Creating Allyship in the Workplace with David G. Smith and W. Brad Johnson
Welcome to the What's Next! podcast with Tiffani Bova. This week I am beyond thrilled to be speaking with Dave Smith and Brad Johnson on the What's Next Podcast! David G. Smith, Ph.D., is a professor of sociology in the National Security Affairs Department at the U.S. Naval War College. As a sociologist trained in military sociology and social psychology, he focuses his research on gender, work, and family issues. He is the co-author of Athena Rising: How and Why Men Should Mentor Women along with Brad Johnson. W. Brad Johnson, Ph.D., is a professor of psychology in the Department of Leadership, Ethics, and Law at the United States Naval Academy and a faculty associate in the Graduate School of Education at Johns Hopkins University. He is the author of thirteen books, including Athena Rising: How and Why Men Should Mentor Women and his newest book, also co-authored with Dave Smith, Good Guys: How Men Can Be Better Allies for Women in the Workplace. THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… men in positions of power and leaders looking to be allies and mentors in the workplace to further workplace gender equity and inclusion. TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… Diversity is often looked at as just counting heads without much thought given to how much individuals feel that they are included and included meaningfully. The research is really clear in terms of increased performance, creativity, and innovation, but diversity without thought to real inclusion does not often lead to those outcomes. Good leadership values this and takes it into account. So, how do leaders show that they have this awareness and demonstrate allyship in the workplace? That's what Dave and Brad are all about, and that's what they're sharing with us in this episode! Diversity expands capacity and ability in an organization and creates more opportunities, not less. But to get there, you need to be intentional and set clear objectives. This also applies to mentors and mentorship, and it also applies to workplace culture and how men in positions of power and leadership speak to, with, and about the women in their organizations. Mentorship is the key to creating meaningful change, inclusion, and allyship in an organization. This isn't about white-knighting or rescuing, this is about creating space, stepping back from the spotlight granted by privilege, and intentionally moving the dial on inclusion with that power. WHAT I LOVE MOST… Dave and Brad's mission to create more allyship and inclusivity in the workplace. But, in recent decades, growth in the economic prosperity of the average family in America has slowed to a crawl. At the same time, the prosperity of America's richest families has grown to a level never seen before. This combination of the stagnation of the average family and the enrichment of the richest Americans threatens American democratic capitalism. Roger provides a unique viewpoint on what has changed and why the helpful pursuit of efficiency has turned into a damaging obsession. He also begins to lay out how to bring about more productive balance. He's the co-founder of Square and served as the chairman of its board until 2010, and still serves on the board of directors. TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… Jim shares his own history with and relationship to entrepreneurship, as well as the process of writing his exciting new book The Innovation Stack: Building an Unbeatable Business One Crazy Idea at a Time! Jim knows what it's like to get excited about problems that need to be solved–like the genesis of Square. He takes this time with the What's Next! audience to demystify the "myth of the entrepreneur" and drive home that it's not just okay, but normal, to not necessarily be "qualified" to innovate. By definition, no one is yet qualified to do what hasn't been done! If you're doing something new you don't get to copy, and you don't necessarily get to feel qualified. Your awareness of timing is also huge, you can do the "right thing" at the wrong time and get a terrible result. You don't get a guarantee, so get comfortable with discomfort and stop worrying about being the most "qualified." Focus on the problem and fix through the fear!
