Andrew Gifford Jr. | Particular Pilgrims
Gifford admired Whitefield and after the evangelist’s death, published a book of 18 of his sermons. In his preface to them, Gifford wrote as follows: “This poor orphan’s plea is that it attempts to preserve the genuine remains of the one who has incontestably proved himself the destitute orphan’s friend”.
Now all this should strike you as odd. Since when did an 18 th century Particular Baptist pastor fill in for an ordained Anglican priest-evangelist? And what did Gifford mean by emphatically calling himself an orphan? The answers to these perplexities will become clearer when we understand Gifford’s story.

1689 14:1-3 The Nature of Saving Faith | Confessing the Faith
We have been considering Chapter 14 of the Confession which opens up the subject, Of Saving Faith. We have worked our way through its three paragraphs. In this talk I need to say something about the nature of saving faith. Reformed theology traditionally speaks of saving faith as consisting of three things. The Reformed taught that faith consisted of notitia (knowledge), assensus (assent), and fiducia (trust). This teaching is certainly true, but I think it will be helpful to refer to the fact that in the Bible saving faith is described in Two Complementary Ways.
