Episode 247: Laura Thweatt – 2:25 Marathoner & 5th place at the Olympic Marathon Trials

Laura Thweatt, a 2:25 marathoner recently placed 5th at the Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta.  Though the goal was to make the team and place top three at the trials, there was a lot to be said about Laura’s 5th place finish and in a big way that day, she resurrected her marathon career after a long battle with injury. Laura raced fiercely and bravely in February at the trials and laid it all out there. It was so fun to see her race with so much confidence and if you weren’t a fan before I don’t see how you won’t be after hearing this conversation. On top of being an insanely talented and driven runner, she is really fun! Laura lives in Boulder, Co and trains with Joe Bosshard’s group. In this conversation we get to hear about what it’s like to be the only marathoner in that group and why she chose to train with them. We also get to hear about how different her training is now compared to what she used to do and what the trials race meant to her. Laura and I also might just get into a little “Love is Blind” talk as well at the end of the conversation, because a girl just can’t help herself when she finds out the person she is interviewing is invested in trash TV like she is. Enjoy my conversation with Laura! Episode 246: Jenny and Scott Jurek

I catch up with returning guests Jenny and Scott Jurek on today’s episode! I am absolutely loving having returning guests on for these fun catch ups. I was excited to talk about one of their most recent big adventures in this episode – they bike packed around Japan WITH their 1 and 3 year old kids! I love that they don’t let having small kids get in the way of seeking adventure and walked away feeling encouraged to do the same. Scott and Jenny are author’s of the book  “North” – a book that documents their journey on the Appalachian Trail.  Scott put in the miles and Jenny put her heart into crewing him and supporting him on this big adventure. Scott is perhaps most known for his book Eat and Run and for his 7- consecutive straight victories at The Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run, he has also taken victories in  the 153-mile Spartathlon, the Hardrock 100 and the Badwater 135-Mile Ultramarathon. Jenny is an outdoor apparel/activewear designer, badass ultra runner (she has 2 100 milers under her belt!) and advocate for safe maternal health for women all over the World. Episode 239: Ashley Higginson

Ashley Higginson is a full time lawyer and qualified for the Olympic Marathon Trials in her first marathon this past fall. Prior to this season of life- she competed professionally as a 3,000 meter steeple chaser running in both the 2012 and the 2016 Olympic Trials. A little bit about Ashley’s backstory – she went to Princeton University  where she was a 7 time Ivy League Outdoor Champion (5k, 3k, and 3k steeple). Her junior year at Princeton, she was 3rd place at the NCAA Outdoor Track National Championships in the 3k steeple. She graduated as a two-time All-American in the steeplechase. Ashley trained with the New Jersey-New York Track Club to train for the 2012 Olympic Trials and ended up training with them for five years. During this time she was also in law school at Rutgers University. She went on the get 4th at the 2012 Olympic Trials in the 3k steeple, missing the team by just over 2 seconds.  In 2013, Ashley made the World Championships team by getting 2nd at the USATF outdoor national championships in the steeplechase. In 2016, Ashley finished 9th at Olympic Trials with all her hopes on making the 2016 team. She retired from professional running soon after to pursue her career as a lawyer. In this episode Ashley and I talk about those life transitions, deciding to go Pro and then deciding to move on from it as well as what it was like to be coached by the legendary Frank Gagliano. There is much about Ashley’s story we can relate to even if most of us will never compete at the level she did! I hope you enjoy this conversation with Ashley! Episode 238: Vanessa Fraser

Vanessa Fraser runs with the Bowerman Track Club and recently made headlines when she came one second from Shalane Flanagan’s indoor 5K record at the BU Invitational in a time of 14:48. She joined Bowerman in the summer of 2018. In her first full year as a professional, she represented the US at the World Cross Country Championships and at the Team Europe vs Team USA Match. She also set personal bests at 3000m and 5000m. It’s safe to say 2020 was off to a great start and she is just getting started in her Pro career! Vanessa got into running through Girls on the Run when she was in elementary school and went on to run for Stanford – she helped the Stanford team to two runner-up finishes in the DMR and capped college career by contributing to Stanford’s third place finish at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track Championships and by setting the school record for 5,000m in Huesden, Belgium (15:09). Note- Vanessa an I recorded this interview about 4 weeks ago, so it was before everything got canceled and at the time the Olympic trials and the Olympics had not yet been postponed.
